The under-construction VIO Orthopedic Hospital in Saiyad Vasna has crossed all limits of civic decency. Residents of Marutidham Society, near Kartikey Nagar, Saiyad Vasna, are up in arms after an illegal toilet and bathroom facility was reportedly built right in the backyard of their residential society.
According to furious locals, the unauthorised structure is already in use. People are regularly walking in and out of it, turning the society’s backyard into what residents describe as an open toilet zone. The constant foul odour has made daily life miserable, while the regular footfall of outsiders has raised serious concerns over privacy, security, and hygiene.
“This is not just illegal — it is shameless,” said a senior resident of Marutidham Society. “We are a residential society, not an extension of any hospital’s premises. The stench is unbearable, and we have to watch strangers using the facility right behind our homes. Where is the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC)?”
Blatant Violation of Building Norms
The construction of a toilet and bathroom facility in the backyard of a private residential society without permission is a clear violation of building norms and zoning regulations. Hospitals and commercial establishments are required to have proper, self-contained sanitation and waste management systems within their own premises — not by encroaching on or burdening neighbouring residential societies.
Residents allege that this illegal facility is linked to the ongoing hospital construction in the area. They fear it is only the beginning of larger encroachments and civic violations if left unchecked.
Public Health at Risk
With the monsoon season approaching, the issue has taken on urgent public health dimensions. Stagnant water, poor drainage around such unauthorised facilities, and constant human waste in a residential backyard can quickly become breeding grounds for mosquitoes, flies, and water-borne diseases.
Local residents are questioning how such a structure could come up without VMC officials noticing — or acting.
Will VMC Act, or Is It Time for the Cockroach Movement in Vadodara?
The incident has triggered sharp questions about accountability. Residents are now openly asking: Will the Vadodara Municipal Corporation take strict and immediate action against this illegal construction, or has the time come to start the Cockroach Movement in Vadodara against such civic violations?
The reference to the Cockroach Movement — the viral GenZ-led symbol of persistent, no-nonsense resistance against systemic failures — reflects growing frustration among citizens tired of watching illegal constructions, encroachments, and civic apathy go unpunished.
Residents’ Demands
Immediate demolition of the illegal toilet and bathroom facility
Strict penal action against the hospital management and all those responsible
Thorough investigation into how permissions were allegedly bypassed
Stronger monitoring by VMC to prevent similar violations in residential areas
This is not just about one toilet in one society’s backyard. It is about whether Vadodara’s civic administration will protect residential neighbourhoods or continue to look the other way while commercial interests trample over citizens’ basic right to clean air, privacy, and dignity.
The outrage is spreading fast on social media, with citizens sharing the incident and demanding accountability.
